Mascot Child & Family Services Ltd

Mascot Child and Family Services Ltd was founded in 2004 by Dr Art O’Malley (consultant infant child & adolescent psychiatrist and EMDR Europe accredited EMDR consultant). We view psychological functioning from the standpoint of bio energy, somatic or body and sensory factors. Over the last 6 years Dr. Art O’Malley has integrated these factors into his use of EMDR therapy to treat a wide variety of conditions. This new therapy is BEST therapy which stands for body, emotions, sensations and thought therapy.

Can BEST therapy help you?

There is increasing scientific evidence for the use of somatosensory therapy combined with EMDR. Best therapy holistically integrates symptoms in both the mind and body achieving symptom resolution and promoting resilience.

We have successfully treated the following conditions with this approach:

  • Trauma in pregnancy and childbirth
  • Trauma in prematurity neonates and infancy
  • Addictions to drugs and alcohol
  • Emotional disorders
  • Attachment disorders
  • Consequences of Bullying
  • Consequences of Emotional Physical and sexual abuse
  • Complicated bereavement
  • Simple and complex PTSD
  • Dissociative disorders
  • Nightmares and flashbacks
  • Fears or phobias
  • Eating disorders
  • Depression
  • Panic attacks
  • Performance anxiety
  • Stress in the workplace
  • Selective mutism

How does BEST therapy work?

The brain has evolved a unique system for encoding day to day experience at a somatosensory level in the most primitive part of the brain: the brainstem. The processing of this encoded sensory information normally occurs at night time when the brain’s sensory processing system is offline. A complex interplay of non REM and REM processing transfers this information into short and long term memories. (cf resources section). When the person’s sensory experience has been overwhelming, resultant traumatic or disturbing memories become trapped by the autonomic nervous system at the level of the brainstem and limbic system or emotional brain. Thus there is fragmented storage of the images, sounds, sensations and feelings associated with the traumatic or anxiety provoking incident.

The person’s adrenaline is activated and the reaction is one of fight, flight, of freeze. There is extreme anxiety and the person is unable to ‘think’. My BEST therapy helps to process the fragmented memories so that they become integrated into the memory storage system of the brain.

How long does a typical session last?

A typical session lasts from 60-90 minutes. This mimics the amount of time spent in the rapid eye movement or REM stage of sleep. The number of sessions necessary is determined by the duration and type of problem and previous trauma history.
